Convocation is a public celebration of individual student achievement. Each individual graduate will walk across the stage and be recognized.
The May Plenary Commencement ceremony is the culmination of the graduation process; a university-wide assembly that brings together graduates from all schools and all degree programs. The President of Rice University confers degrees upon graduating students en masse in a formal statement to the assembly; students are not recognized individually at this ceremony. The guest Commencement Speaker as well as representatives of the university will address the graduates and their families.
Is there a separate Doctoral Hooding Ceremony in December?
No. Doctoral students will be hooded at the beginning of the December Convocation ceremony, followed by advanced degrees, and undergradute degrees.
What do I do if I'm not able to attend Commencement and/or my assigned Convocation?
All eligible graduates are invited to attend the Convocation ceremony on Monday, December 9th. Students who are unable to attend either the December Convocation or the May Convocation and Commencement ceremonies must notify the appropriate university representative below.
Can I participate in both December and May Convocations?
No. Graduates can participate (cross the stage) in only one Convocation ceremony. December graduates are welcome, however, to join the May Plenary Commencement ceremony on Saturday.
What is the attire for Convocation?
The weather in Houston in December is typically mild with intermittent cool days. For guests, men typically wear nice shirts and slacks or a coat and tie, and ladies typically wear nice slacks, skirts, or dresses. (Graduates are required to wear regalia to participate.)
With whom do I speak with to confirm that I am graduating?
Please contact the Office of the Registrar at firstname.lastname@example.org.
One of my guests cannot walk long distances, can I drop him/her off closer to Alice Pratt Brown Hall?
Yes, the recommended drop off point is alongside Alice Pratt Brown Hall on the north side of the Inner Loop across from the Intramural Fields. However, we ask that you quickly drop your guest off and proceed to complimentary parking for December Convocation guests in West Lot 2. No cars will be allowed to park along the Inner Loop.
